What You Need to Know
When you experience a dental emergency, it is important to follow the correct steps immediately to avoid permanent damage to your bite and smile.
Missing or Dislodged Tooth
A missing or dislodged tooth can be a scary time, but in some cases, it’s fixable, and we’re here to help you manage the pain. The best thing to do if your tooth has been knocked out or dislodged is to place it back in the socket until you can visit your dentist. Rinse your mouth, washing away blood and other harmful particles. If you cannot fit the tooth back into the socket, store it in warm milk, saline, or your own saliva. When handling the tooth, take it by the crown, not the root. Visit your dentist or an emergency room as soon as possible.
Fractured or Broken Tooth
After rinsing your broken tooth with warm water, apply ice to your cheek on the affected side to reduce swelling and sensitivity. Over the counter pain medication may be used to control the pain or discomfort. Visit your dentist as soon as possible. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the break but your dentist will work with you to develop a custom treatment plan to get your smile back in no time!
Managing Tooth Pain at Home
Minor discomfort and tooth pain can sometimes be remedied at home and may be the result of foreign particles that have been stuck between teeth or gums. It is best to rinse your mouth thoroughly and avoid placing pain medication right on the affected area. If the pain persists, don’t hesitate to contact us and we will fit you in as soon as we can!
